Effect of the microstructure on the tribological properties of HIPed and PTA-welded Fe-based hardfacing alloy

This work focuses on the comparison of tribological properties Norem02, a Fe-based hardfacing elaborated by hot isostatic pressing (HIP), pressure-assisted sintering technique and plasma transferred arc welding (PTAW), more conventional coating process. The influence microstructural modifications induced elaboration process is investigated. aim present study to assess possibility considering HIP as an effective alternative techniques. Wear tests were carried out using pin-on-disk tribometer with ball-on-plate configuration under loads 2, 5 10 N against WC-Co ball counterpart. worn tracks typical marks abrasive wear followed oxidative but also adhesive ones. HIPed sample presents dominance wear, while for PTAW dominant mechanism wear. results indicate that in case alloy resistance generally increased load rate Norem02 reduced about 5.5 times. fine microstructure obtained HIP, containing small globular carbides well dispersed matrix allows better withstand mechanical stresses occurring during tests, reducing surface damages.
